With His New Quiet Screamers
Available Fall 2016
On what would have been his 72nd birthday, Amish is very proud to announce First House (AMI 048), the final recordings from free jazz legend and Birmingham, Alabama native, Arthur Doyle.
Recorded live at the Stone July 11, 2012, these six pieces are backed by His New Quiet Screamers, a Brooklyn-based ensemble adding muscle and movement to Doyle’s always already free, non-linear saxophone, flute and vocal lines.
The live set collected on this LP slips outside those reductive categories that pit noise against melody, bop against free jazz, jazz standard against total improvisation (by way of evidence, listen to Doyle’s versions of “My Funny Valentine” and “Stormy Weather” on these recordings). These pieces move with an improvisatory immediacy aiming to capture the impossible: ecstatic music at the very moment of its making.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Doyle studied Music Education at Tennessee State University in Nashville. In his early Alabama and Tennessee-based years, Doyle worked with an array of musicians and in a range of musical styles, from R&B to Soul to traditional jazz, collaborating with everyone from future Sun Ra Arkestra trumpeter Walter Miller to Funk-Soul-Disco diva Gladys Knight. Doyle officially emerged on the international Jazz scene, however, playing on Noah Howard’s iconic Black Ark (Polydor, 1968), and later on Milford Graves’ 1976 IPS LP BaBi. In 1978 Doyle debuted as a band leader and soloist with Alabama Feeling, released on Charles Tyler’s Ak-Ba label. Alabama Feeling features Charles Stephens (of the Sun Ra Arkestra) on trombone, drummers Rashied Sinan and Bruce Moore, and bassist Richard Williams. After the release of Alabama Feeling, Doyle continued to ignore boundaries and generic conventions, playing with Rudolph Grey as part of The Blue Humans, which introduced his music to NYC’s Downtown and NoWave scenes, including the likes of Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. In the early 1990s, Doyle’s work was re-introduced to another generation, largely through Moore and Ranaldo’s work, on releases for labels like Ecstatic Peace and Audible Hiss. Since the late ‘90s, Doyle continued a fevered pace in terms of his collaborations, most notably with Sunny Murray, Hamid Drake, Takahesi Mizutani (of the Les Rallizes Denudes) and Sabu Toyozumi, among many others.
His New Quiet Screamers consists of an acclaimed ensemble of musicians with a wide array of history and associations. Members have played with and/or include: Sunwatchers, Dark Meat, NYMPH, Effie Briest, David First's Western Ennisphere, Matana Roberts, among others.
This gatefold LP includes a commissioned essay from noted Jazz historian Clifford Allen who describes His New Quiet Screamers as “vault[ing] and envelop[ing] Doyle’s bursts” of sound to the point where Doyle “sounds positively invigorated.” Doyle’s final recordings offer what Allen describes as a kind of “unfurling” of the free jazz lexicon, offering insights on “the spidery architecture of an obliquely-referenced standard” that characterizes this enigmatic artist’s entire career. Standard and experimental improvisation alike, First House offers a window on Doyle’s last performances, an artist very much at the top of his playing and artistic form.
The LP is an edition of 300 copies and will include an exclusive digital download (ONLY AVAILABLE WITH LP PURCHASE) of Doyle performing with His New Quiet Screamers at Issue Project Room September 22, 2011.

It's been a busy but supremely satisfying year at Amish Records HQ. In addition to releasing three incredible recordings we were excited to be involved with lots of other things... Charles Waters's curating a week at The Stone which saw the return of the great Gold Sparkle Band, Nick Forté & Dan Melchior celebrating their respective albums live at Trans-Pecos, M Dwinell and Nick Forté both presenting exhilarating live sets on WFMU Radio, seeing Ricci Albenda's painting used in the artwork collaboration with M Dwinell on display at the Whitney Museum and various shows / in-stores by M Dwinell, Metal Mountains, PG Six, Samara Lubelski, and Chuck Johnson.
Thanks for the continued support and we are looking forward to another year.
Coming 2016: Arthur Doyle LP (includes digital only bonus album), PG Six LP re-issues, new Metal Mountains LP and more

The Lloyd Pack 'a tribute' LP/DA (AMI047)
Released Sept 6
The Lloyd Pack A Tribute initially emerged from a conversation that Dan Melchior had with Graham Lambkin about the prospect of doing a “Faux African” record. For two British-expats living in the U.S. in the twenty-first century, this LP offers a peculiarly whimsical variation on the “Faux African,” infusing lo-fi tribal rhythms with post-punk dance in the spirit of early Adam Ant, Fun Boy Three and the Fall. If one were to imagine adding Ivor Cutler to this British-mix, it might approach what Melchior delivers on this LP. And for the record, Cutler is a Scot.
Lambkin offered some vocal components, alongside a large cast (including the late Letha Rodman-Melchior, Angela Sawyer aka 'Preggy Peggy', Gnarlos, Sarah Hennies, Le Ann Baca Bartlett, and Johnny Brewton), all of whom chimed in on the recording process.
Nick Forté 'Primordial Forms' AMI037R/W) Required Wreckers volume 7
Released June 19
Primordial Forms is Nick Forté’s most demanding and conceptual work to date. Forté has always been intrigued by the visual representation of sound on the computer screen. Editing software depicts sound as “waveforms” which can look like jagged landscapes or abstract geometric forms. For the five pieces that comprise the record, Forté created five one-second sounds on his computer based purely on the visual appeal of the waveform. He made these waveforms with the speakers off. These visually appealing forms became the seeds for the pieces on the record.
With the speakers turned back on, Forté then turned these discrete sound units into long form music through a slow and deliberate process of looping, editing, and manipulation. The entire record was made in a pirated version of Sound Forge from the late 90s. No sequencers or multi-track programs were used and no real time playing occurred on these tracks. Forte’s compositional process can be likened to cartoon animation, or Muybridge’s photographic innovations capturing movement and motion.
Though these pieces began in the eye, they end in the gut. Short sequences of tones and bursts of sound are embedded in rhythm and form. Throughout the album representational sound is confused with the non-representational and the end result, a combination of the computer-based and the organic, is a work of subtle power and dynamism.
Forté is one of the most innovative and overlooked figures in contemporary experimental and extreme music, though those aware of his discography recognize the arch and foundational significance of his work. From Rorschach to Raspberry Bulbs, and more importantly in his solo releases on Schematic, Soft Abuse, Sublight, Wodger and Catholic Tapes, Forté is one of the most versatile and rigorous musicians working today.

LP includes a 12-page book that expands on the images, themes and ideas central to these five compositions.
M Dwinell 'Golden Ratio' LP/DA (Ami036R/W) Required Wreckers volume 6
Released Jan 12
Golden Ratio offers the only current documentation of M Dwinell’s just intonation organ work, recorded between 2007-2008. These pieces provide a pivotal shift away from Dwinell’s early Kraut-inspired rock-based improvisation with Boston’s BRIGHT in the direction of his recent electronic-based compositional work with Brooklyn’s FORMA. Unlike either of these projects, however, Golden Ratio focuses exclusively on a natural tuning system generated from the harmonic series. By precise control of his instrument's tuning, Dwinell sets into motion a dynamic musical system of pressure, intensity and calm. Golden Ratio incorporates both static pulsing drones and heavily arpeggiated passages, culminating in melodic lines that epitomize Dwinell’s unique musical vocabulary as developed over the last twenty years.

The album infuses lo-fi tribal rhythms with post-punk dance in the spirit of early Adam Ant, Fun Boy Three and the Fall.
Speaking of Adam Ant, “Subtle Innuendos” is a re-imagining of “Goody Two Shoes".
The Lloyd Pack is Dan Melchior of The Broke Revue, Das Menace with a cast of 1000’s (or maybe just under a dozen) including Graham Lambkin (Kye Records, The Shadow Ring), Preggy Peggy aka Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records), Letha Rodman-Melchior and more.

NICK FORTÉ 'Primordial Forms" LP/DA
Amish Records is happy to share “Itchy Gnomes”, the first song from the new album of Dan Melchior’s The Lloyd Pack. This release follows the Know Your Lloyd Pack 7” (Siltbreeze 2012) and the full length At Home With The Lloyd Pack (L'Espirit D'lescalier 2013). The new LP pushes Melchior’s musical practice and his on-going collaborations in a decidedly more dance—albeit avant-post-punk-and-homespun—direction.
The Lloyd Pack A Tribute (AMI047) initially emerged from a conversation Melchior had with Graham Lambkin about the prospect of doing a “Faux African” record. Dan Melchior has put out dozens of records in the last decade under multiple guises including the Broke Review, Dan Melchior und Das Menace, under his own name and in collaboration with artists as diverse Billy Childish, Holly Golightly, Russell Walker, The Spits etc., and has emerged as one of the most unique voices in American outsider rock and experimental music.
